EAC4U – The Writer’s Craft

“I think there are two types of writers, the architects and the gardeners. The architects plan everything ahead of time, like an architect building a house. […] The gardeners dig a hole, drop in a seed and water it.” ―George R.R. Martin

Is writing an art or a craft?

Video description

Browsing Assistance: The video presents statements from a male narrator in alternation with the visual elements of the video that bear meaning.

Narrator

Writing is a widening horizon. One could say that writing is an art. Others that it is a craft. Could it be a combination of both? Inspiration comes in waves that ebb and flow anywhere, any time.

Visual Description

On a purple and orange screen, the follow words appear as the narrator speaks: “Writing is a widening horizon.” Undulating lines fly across the screen. A circle containing the word “Art” appears, then another circle with the word “Craft.” The circles combine to create a single circle with the words “Art + Craft” inside it. The undulating lines keep flying across the screen, creating shapes and colours as they go.

Narrator

You can be telling your own story, share someone else’s experiences, report on real-world events or write your interpretation of life as it happens.

Visual Description

The undulating lines disappear inside a pen that writes the word “Writing” on the screen.

Narrator

Words are used in many ways to express ideas. You are relaying a message when you write a poem, a script, a short story, a review, an article.

Visual Description

A piece of blank paper appears and the pen writes some indistinct lines of text on it as the narrator says “a poem.” The pen disappears, replaced by the Comedy and Tragedy masks that flank the page when the narrator says “a script.” When the narrator says “a short story,” more lines of text appear on the page; when he says “a review,” a review with gold stars appears on the page; and when he says “an article,” a blog article appears on what is now a computer page.

Narrator

Writing is like a game: you play with the language, you choose the most fitting words, create free flowing sentences, make use of evocative stylistic devices and punctuation.

Visual Description

The computer page disappears, replaced by the following sentence: “Skills are improved through consistent work.” When the narrator says “play with the language,” the word “improved” is erased and the sentence becomes: “Skills are honed through consistent work.” When he says “choose the most fitting words,” more words are erased and added, and the sentence becomes: “Skills are honed through careful and persistent work.” When he says “create free flowing sentences,” the sentence becomes: “Skills are honed through careful and persistent effort.” And finally, when he says “make use of evocative stylistic devices and punctuation,” the sentence becomes: “Like pebbles polished by the sea, skills are honed through careful and persistent effort!”

Narrator

You convey meaningful messages to captivate your audience, the readers for whom you choose to write.

Visual Description

The sentence disappears and is replaced by the pen. The pen draws arcs across the screen, twining between circles that contain images of different people.

Narrator

Writing skills are perfected by writing day after day after day. To do so, you will need dedication, discipline and persistence on your path to becoming a more effective writer. Experience, creativity and critical thinking are stepping stones in a writer’s journey.

Visual Description

The pen lands into a cup on a female writer’s desk. The girl is typing away at her computer. The scene changes and shows the same girl reading a book on a bench outside, then again to show her writing in a notebook at a café, and again to show her back at her desk. The camera zooms in on the image of the sun through the large window behind her, and the screen fades to white.

End of the description.
